Antoine Ignace Melling (1763-1831) was a French painter and architect. Son of a sculptor, Melling studied architecture and mathematics, and lived in Italy, Egypt, and in 1784 as attaché to the Russian Embassy for eighteen years in Istanbul. In 1795 he was employed as the architect of Sultan Selim III, who was known for his interest in modernization, and his sister Hatice, for whom he designed the interior and gardens of her palace in Ortaköy. While living in Istanbul he drew views of the city. He is known as one of the insightful Western artists who is familiar with the Ottoman empire since Gentile Bellini. Later when he returned to Paris, he was appointed as a landscape painter to Napoleon's wife Josephine. He set up an engraving studio in Paris and with the support of the best engravers and typographers of the time, he published his drawings.
