Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723) is one of the most important architects of the Baroque era in Austria. He is also a sculptor and architectural historian who shaped the tastes of the Habsburg empire. When he was 16 he went to Rome, Italy and entered the studio of the great Baroque sculptor and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini where he acquired knowledge of ancient art and archaeology. His major works include Schönbrunn Palace, Karlskirche, and the Austrian National Library in Vienna, and Schloss Klessheim, Holy Trinity Church, and the Kollegienkirche in Salzburg. His works can be found at Belvedere Museum in Vienna and Metropolitan Museum in New York. (Text source: Wikipedia)
